*Cane Corso [connie corso] -

The Cane Corso is bred to be a protector and guardian. In their history from Italy they were used to herd livestock and to protect properties. They are well known for their protection instinct without being too heavy and "muscular" as its larger cousin the Mastino Napoletano is. The Cane Corso has a stable mind, is alert and protective, and does well in obedience training.  It is submisive to its human family, yet suspicous, alert, and theatening to strangers, which makes them a formidable family dog.The name of the Cane Corso is derived from the Latin word "cohors", which means guardian and protector.

The Cane Corso was used as a multi-purpose farmdog, for guardian  of family and properties, a protector livestock, a cattle-herder, in hunting, and in the central and southern regions of Italy.
